Title: Lot 2 Utagawa Kunisada View of Fuji Woodblock Print Ukiyo-e
Description: This is a lot of two prints by Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III. The prints are very similar with only slight differences! We believe one to be an original and the other to be a re-carved later edition of the same design. Both are signed ‘from the brush of Kunisada Toyokuni’. The earlier print which we believe to be original is also signed by the publisher, Yamamotoya Heikichi, who worked with the most famous and successful wood block artists. The scene shows three women walking along a cliff by the sea. The central woman is a noble and the other two women work for her. There are two men carrying luggage behind them. In the background is Mount Fuji.
Signed: From the Brush of Kunisada Toyokuni on the right side of both prints. On the older smaller print, signed by publisher Yamamotoya Heikichi on the lower right side.
Circa: 1850s and later
Dimensions: larger print paper 10.675x15 inches, image 9x13.75 inches. Smaller print size 9.25x13.75 inches
Condition: Both have some toning. Smaller one has a large rip in the corner and some heavy discoloration and light fading to inks. Both are heavily creased. No significant pinholes or insect damage.
Provenance: From the estate of a local retiree, whose grandfather collected Ukiyo-e prints throughout the 1930s.
