HAGIWARA HIDEO (1913-2007) Second half of the 20th century innovative sosaku (creative/abstract) hanga artist. In 1933, he entered the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko now known as the Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku (Tokyo University of the Arts) to for further study in oil painting. Upon graduating, he took a job working for Takamizawa Mokuhan Company where he learned the Ukiyoe printing process. During WWII he started making sosaku or abstract hanga prints but was drafted into the war. Most of paintings were lost in the bombing of Tokyo in 1945 and after a long bout of sickness from TB he starting making sosaku woodcuts. By 1956 he was during his own shows at the Yoseido gallery. He was also well known for his unusual technigue of printing on the backside of washi an letting it bleed to the front, creating a atmosphere or mood setting known as ryomen-zuri .
