Description
Western Asia, Persia, modern day Iran, Nishapur, ca. 10th century CE. An outstanding example of fine Nishapur artistry, a wheel-thrown pottery bowl with a basin surface enveloped with intricate geometric motifs in hues of vermilion, camel, and jet-black atop a cream-hued ground. The wide bowl rests atop a circular foot and exhibits wide walls adorned along the exterior rim with a register of repeating cresting waves in black pigment. Within the basin is an elaborate, four-lobed knot filled with petite white spots, a beige double-helix outlined in black, a program of red and black columnar motifs, and a top register of black stippling atop a white ground. A stupendous bowl from ancient Nishapur! Size: 9.3" W x 3.625" H (23.6 cm x 9.2 cm)
