Description
John Hancock Signed Militia Appointment. One sheet, 11" x 13"; July 1, 1781. Document appoints Joseph Bradley Varnum to the rank of "Captain of a Company in the Seventh [Regiment] of Militia in the County of Midd[leton] whereof Jonathan Brown Esq is Colonel." Signed, "John Hancock" as governor of Massachusetts. Countersigned by John Avery as secretary. Blind embossed paper seal affixed at top left. Condition: Heavy wear with chipping at all margins, especially right and bottom. Some separations remain at folds, with some separations inexpertly repaired with tape on verso. Staining from tape is visible on recto and verso. A piece of card stock is affixed to back at top left corner. Uneven toning and foxing. Condition is fair.
