18th C. Indonesian Kris Handles Wood, Antler, & Silver
Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra / Borneo, ca. late 18th to mid 19th century CE. A fabulous ensemble of 4 kris handles: 2 wood, 1 deer antler, and 1 silver. Both wooden handles present in the form of anthropomorphic figures leaning forward. The larger boasts a natural hue of chocolate brown and displays a kneeling figure with both hands on the torso. The naturalistic visage is composed of an arched brow, a broad nose, a pronounced philtrum, and full lips, all capped with a lengthy coiffure or hair. A horizontal drill hole at the back of the figure's head would have allowed the kris to be suspended. Boasting a lustrous burnish over mottled shades of caramel and butterscotch, the second wood handle exhibits the stylized form of a crouching figure with arms resting on their knees. The visage features a prominent nose and smiling mouth and a spike rises from behind their head. Alternatively, the handle formed from carved deer antler is intricately carved with several zoomorphic figures. Its form bends in an acute angle with the grip of the handle wrapped in braided wire of a manganese-iron alloy and its tapered end adorned by additional wire bearing petite tufts of animal hair. Last, the silver handle is beautifully embellished with swirling abstract and floral motifs with two lovely registers of undulating stones of cubic zirconia on its grip. Size of largest: 3.625" W x 5.875" H (9.2 cm x 14.9 cm); 6.375" H (16.2 cm) on included custom stand; Size of silver: 2.875" W x 3.125" H (7.3 cm x 7.9 cm); 5.125" H (13 cm) on included custom stand; Quality of silver: 95.6%

Condition
Silver handle is not removable from stand, so it has not been weighed. A few stable fissures to smallest with minor perforation on back. One side of silver handle is loose and top half is removable from bottom. All have light nicks and abrasions, commensurate with age and use. Otherwise, all are very nice with lovely patina.
