Capital Stock 6,000 Shares, March 19th, 1863, stamped over in blue "Authorised Capital 10,000 Shares Feby 11th, 1865." Folds, wrinkles, toning. 8.5 x 12" Near the end of the Civil War, American Express increased capital to 10,000 shares on Feb. 11, 1865. New certificates were made, but they were not ready in time for the official distribution, such that a few certificates were issued in late February and March with a rubber stamp placed over the [x=#8220/]old[x=#8221/] 6,000 share certificates showing the new Capital stock amount and the date. Interestingly, Butterfield, in poor health, signed several (or all) of the early rubber stamped varieties as Vice President until the new printed issue was available in April and Wells, Fargo and Holland could continue to sign them. Also of interest to collectors is that some of the 6,000 Capital Share certificates that were sold or transferred at a later date were also stamped with the rubber stamp overprint, but it was done after the issue of the new 10,000 share Capital Stock issuance.
