Description
Two documents involving important American colonial financier Robert Morris, also signer the declaration of independence. The first is a North American land Company certificate signed by Morris issued to Byrd Savage and bird of London for three shares on March 16, 1795. Morris sought British financing for some of his New York and Washington DC land deals, which this certificate represents. The second document is a share certificate in the Pennsylvania population company issued to Robert Morris for 850 shares signed by John Nicholson as president and issued on February 6, 1793. Nice early pair of documents from the postcolonial of the 18th century. Nicholson was Morris' business partner. Nicholson was also a financier and land speculator who was elected Comptroller General of Pennsylvania from 1782 to 1794. He was impeached for mismanaging state funds for his own gain in 1793 but was found not guilty. When the inflationary bubble burst in late 1796, Nicholson was greatly overextended, and his paper empire soon collapsed. Robert Morris went to debtor's prison in 1798 and Nicholson followed in the winter of 1799-1800. Although he tried to salvage his affairs from prison, his optimism eventually failed. He suffered a complete mental and physical breakdown and died in prison on December 5, 1800, leaving debts of over $4 million. Date: Country (if not USA): State: City: Provenance: Ken Prag Collection
