Description
A scarce stock certificate for one share of the Lancaster-Philadelphia Turnpike Company. Dated March 16, 1795. Issued to Joseph Burd of Dauphin Co. Signed by treasurer Tench Francis, and by the president, William Bingham. Bingham (1752-1804) was one of the richest men in Pennsylvania and the U.S., making his fortune through privateers and trading, and major land investments in upstate New York and Maine. He helped broker the Louisiana Purchase. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress and a U.S. Senator. Tench Francis was the first cashier of the Bank of North America, and headed the commission that laid out the city of Pittsburgh. 7.5 x 9", printed on vellum and filled in in manuscript. This is reputedly the first American stock certificate with a vignette, which features a Conestoga Wagon headed toward a toll gate. This turnpike was the first privately built road of importance in the U.S. Condition: Very Good
