1886-Dated Oil Painting by John West of the Ship "Nancy"
July 1886-Dated, Oil Painting on Canvas titled, "Ship Nancy Leaving Whampoa" Signed by artist "John West / Boston", Framed, Choice Very Fine.
This enigmatic Oil Painting on Canvas measures 19" x 24.5" (by sight), Framed to an overall size of 23.5" x 29", being Signed by the artist "John West" at lower right. The Painting is laid on a sturdy heavy cardstock or thin board (not examined out of the frame), the exposed reverse side is lined with a early Map of the Pacific Ocean and Australia & New Zealand, with views of China in its margins. A handwritten label affixed to the stretcher reads: "Ship Nancy Painted By John West Boston July 1886". The title reads, "Ship Nancy Leaving Whampoa" is painted across the bottom. The image is of a three-masted schooner under full sail, with an American Flag at the stern, and the name "Nancy" on the bow. The artist, John West, has eluded our attempts to find him listed for additional information and further research may reveal more details on this artist. The overall condition of the painting is excellent, with no flaws or defects noted though it could be brightened by professional cleaning. This original American Ship in trade with China Oil Painting has nice visuals and is wonderful for display.
