1919 USS DOHENY WWI NAUTICAL HOMEWARD BOUND FLAG BANNER REMNANT w PROVENANCE
Description
WWI ERA 1919 U.S.S. DOHENY III HOMEWARD BOUND BANNER FLAG REMNANT. Envelope accompanied with flag remnant provides identification reading; "Piece of Homeward Bound Banner flown from U.S.S. E. L. Doheney (sic) coming from Spalato, Dalmatia to New York, Apr 27, 1919 to May 17, 1919 - 250 ft. long". The USS Doheny III was a US Navy tanker ship, decommissioned from service in November of 1919. It is probable that they were transporting troops from Europe to the U.S.following the end of World War I and a service member snagged this souvenir of his grateful return home. Approximate flag remnant size is 5-1/4" (height) X 12" (diagonal tip to tip). Condition: machine hemmed and raw cut edges with loose threads and tears. light soiling and staining.
