Davids notes: A fairly rare example of this artist, whose life was tumultuous and short-lived.This work, painted 7 years before his death, was done after his return to San Francisco from Sweden, after fleeing the country for parole violations.The artist is at the height of his skills here, capturing Tess as she lounges on the bed, with the wall light illuminating her long green socks and orange hair.Its a sensitive and loving work by an artist at the end of his life,drawing on all of his emotions and talents.For those unfamiliar with Columbus Street in San Francisco in the 1970s,it was an area near Chinatown and Fishermans Wharf, near North Beach and the ocean, with a reputation for prostitution,derelicts and tenements.It was often a home to writers,artists and the Beat generation,still hanging around from the 1960s.

Raymond Rowley King
(From AskArt.com) Raymond Rowley King was born in California on February 13, 1927. King studied in Los Angeles at the Chouinard Art Institute. He served nearly four years at the California Medical Facility near Vacaville, CA on a heroin conviction. He honed his painting skills while incarcerated and was successful in selling many of his canvases while there. Upon release, he opened a studio in San Francisco but soon fled to Sweden in 1964 due to violating his parole. He died in San Francisco on August 13, 1984.
