November 275-June 276 AD. Lugdunum mint. Obv: IMP C CL TACITVS AVG legend with radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev: PROVID DEOR legend with Providentia standing left holding cornucopia and baton, globe at feet. Sear 11799 variant (reverse legend and mint); RIC V(i) 49. 3.70 grams. ("). Property of an Essex gentleman. Tacitus reigned for around six months before his death, possibly by assassination. During his short reign however, he implemented a number of numismatic innovations. He is believed to have claimed descent from the famous historian Cornelius Tacitus. [No Reserve]
