Description
9th-6th century BC. A bronze axehead with slender expanding blade and rounded cutting edge, flared socket with stud to the reverse. See Maxwell-Hyslop, R., ‘Western Asiatic Shaft-Hole Axes’ in Iraq, Vol.11, No.1, Spring, 1949, pp.1-129. 292 grams, 31cm (12 1/4"). From a Japanese collection, 1990s. Weapons like this one would have been entombed in the small rock graves in which their owners were buried; similar pieces come from the archaeological sites of Marlik and Kalar Dasht. The axe is similar to the type 23 of the Rachel Maxwell-Hyslop classification.
