Ancient Greece, Cyprus, Cypro-Archaic I Period, Type IV, ca. 700 to 600 BCE. A lovely pottery jar presenting a flat, circular base and a rounded shoulder that dramatically tapers to a conical neck and flared, annular rim. The neck of the ancient vessel is adorned with a raised horizontal band and a loop handle that connects it to the shoulder. Embellished with black glaze on a light orange ground, the elegant juglet features three target motifs above four rings on its body, a horizontally striped neck, and a black-painted handle. At this time, Cyprus became part of a pan-Mediterranean culture that included Archaic-period Greek and Phoenician influence, and vessels like this were part of a larger trade network as well as artistic and commercial conversation. An exemplar of Greek Cypriot pottery that preceded the emergence of Classical Greek pottery.
