Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A fabulous leaded-copper statue of a mummiform and seated Osiris, god of the underworld. He wears the elaborate Atef crown with two lateral plumes flanking the uraeus and a cobra on the front. His face is serene with large cat-like eyes and a protruding nose above the chin postiche. He holds a flagellum and a short-handled heka scepter across his chest - both are Egyptian symbols of authority and kingship, showing Osiris's close connection with the pharaoh and his role as Ruler of the Dead. Such a figure may have been in a home shrine of a wealthy family or used in a temple. The underside of Osiris’ feet and backside have openings which may have secured the god upon a separate throne or pedestal. Lucite stand for photography purposes only. Size: 1.5" W x 5.25" H (3.8 cm x 13.3 cm)
