Description
Title: Kunichika 1866 Actor Kabuki Woodblock Print Ukiyo-e
Description: This is a woodblock print or ukiyo-e by Toyohara Kunichika and published by Kiya Sojiro. Kunichika was a student of Utagawa Kunisada, one of the most prolific print artists in 19th century Japan who is still renowned to this day. Kunichika primarily made yakusha-e, or prints of actors playing their roles. This is one of his actor prints, showing a samurai taking off his hat and drawing his sword. He has a very colorful outfit on and the pigments are still very vibrant! Censor seal indicates the print was made in July of 1866.
