Catalog Note:
Johanna Schröder was not only the daughter of notable Dutch interior decorator Truus Schröder-Schräder, but she also trained with groundbreaking De Stijl figure Gerrit Rietveld and became his architectural assistant. Along with her mother and siblings, Johanna grew up in Utrecht in Rietveld's now world-famous Schröder House (1924), which features a second floor with moving walls to facilitate open, adjustable spaces. In 1954, Schröder became one of the first women to practice architecture in the Netherlands. From 1963 through 1988, Schröder was a working architect and professor in New York City and Richmond, Virginia.
