Description

Cotton album quilt, hand appliqued and hand quilted, made by a mother, ("From your mother, Sarah P. Willis, June, 1869" hand inked in one block) for her daughter, with blocks commemorating the grandmother (center hand inked, with detailed drawing of her home: "In memory of Grandma Crane, To Mrs. Addie C. Jackson, From Aunt Woodruff.") and from various aunts, uncles, and cousins, with hand written directives and detailed folky appliqued figures. A dog block features a family pet: "Our Dog, Billy Wilson." One block features a pale anchor and rope with the line "Hope is an [anchor] to the soul." Another shows an appliqued hand pointing to an envelope, "Addie, do not forget to write. M. H. C Woodruff." Other blocks feature hearts, keys, rings, stars, tulips, crosses, Bible ("Jesus said, 'I am the Way, the Truth, and the life.' Search the scriptures for they testify to Him."), Masonic square and compass and other designs. The quilt came out of central Pennsylvania. It measures 76" X 88" and is in fair/poor condition, with extensive damage mostly occurring in the early brown print sashing and border fabric. There is quilting around and within the applique and in straight line, diamond, ripple, and other designs in the background, all at 7-8 stitches to the inch. The back is white, the hand stitched, worn binding is the same fabric used in the border, and the batting is thin.
