MUSEUM QUALITY, VERY EARLY Vintage 9-Patch Antique Quilt ~Signed & Dated 1845!
Description
This MUSEUM QUALITY cotton "nine patch checkerboard"/album patch quilt is hand pieced and hand quilted, with hand inked and hand embroidered names and dates in many of the blocks. Some of the names are: "Miss E. Brown," "Magdelena Brown," Miss F. Brown," "C.A. Book," "M.A. Book," "Miss S. A. Jeffries," "Mary Beinhold," "F. Breneman," and "Mrs. C. Brown," and "Miss L. Gomer." The date "1945" is visible in several blocks, one of which includes the month "September." One block identifies the location as simply "Maytown." A detailed conch shell is inked in one block. The quilt was found in Colorado, but has all of the markers of a New England or New York State quilt that later migrated out west.
It measures a generous 92" X 94" and is in excellent condition, with some age spotting and surface dirt (mostly on the back) and no wear. The quilt feels remarkably strong and sturdy overall.
The quilting is excellent, with straight line, grid, clam shell, primitive sea shell, and feathered designs quilted throughout at 7-8 stitches to the inch.
The back and hand stitched, tiny rolled binding are white, and the batting is thin. You can see cotton seed residue inside when you hold the quilt up to the light.
The GORGEOUS, VERY EARLY FABRICS, SIGNATURES & DATES, and AMAZING CONDITION make this VERY EARLY COLLECTOR'S QUILT stand out -- TRULY MUSEUM QUALITY!
