Description
Carved and Painted Wooden Plaque with American Eagle and Shield, riband that reads "United for Victory", atop an anchor with superimposed view of a ship ringed by the words "War Service Ship Building", the lower riband reading "N. A. Comeau". Signed NB Comeau lower left. 25" x 15 3/4". Shrinkage crack, scuffs. Tenneco label verso.The United States entered World War I in April 1917. Within days, the federal government created the Emergency Fleet Corporation (EFC) to construct a fleet of merchant ships. The EFC hired the American International Shipbuilding Corporation to build and operate the largest shipyard in the world: Hog Island, near Philadelphia. This was their commemorative badge pattern.
