Item Details
Description
  • Title: Ca. 1910 Pair Of Color Chalk, Folk Art Drawings Of Native American Indians On School Slates; Chief Thunder Cloud And Grey Eagle.
  • Provenance/Additional Info: ORIGINAL ART PASTEL PORTRAITS WITH AN INSCRIPTION ON THE PORTRAIT OF CHIEF THUNDER CLOUD SIGNED BY A SANFORD LEWIS. THE INSCRIPTION AND SIGNATURE SUGGEST THAT THE FOLK ARTIST IS SANFORD WHO VISITED A YOUTH CAMP. TO PRESERVE THE WORK, SHEETS OF GLASS HAVE BEEN TAPED LONG AGO OVER THE WOODEN FRAMED, SCHOOL HOUSE SLATES. (AS AN ASIDE, RESEARCH FINDS A REFERENCE TO MORE THAN ONE "CHIEF GREY CLOUD BUT THE MOST LIKELY CHIEF IS A MAN BORN "DOMINIQUE LA PLANTE (A.K.A. JAMES NIGHT RIDER) IN ALBERTA, CANADA. HAILING FROM THE BLACKFOOT TRIBE PROMINENT IN MONTANA AND CANADA, HE BECAME A MODEL IN NEW YORK CITY THAT LANDED A JOB FOR THE PROFILE ON THE INDIAN HEAD NICKEL. UNPROVEN REFERENCES TO HIS WORK EXIST AS AN INDIAN WARS SCOUT, BUFFALO BILL WILD WEST SHOW PERFORMER AND P. T. BARNUM ASSOCIATION. HIS PORTRAIT HANGS IN THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY. ACTUAL PHOTOS OF HIM IN HIS FEATHER BONNET ARE VERY SIMILAR TO THE HEAD DRESS PORTRAIT ON THE SLATE…INCLUDING THE REPEATED TRIANGLE PATTERN ON THE BEADED HEADBAND.) APPROXIMATE DIMENSIONS ARE 10-1/2 X 7-1/2 X 3/8 THICK. CONDITION: GLASS HAS SOME LIGHT DUST UNDER IT. ORIGINAL TAPE SEALS WHICH HAVE CHIPPING AND TEARS. TWO SMALL HOLES IN WOOD FRAME ON VERSO OF EACH SUGGESTING THEY HAD EYE HOOKS FOR HANGING WIRE AT ONE POINT. PASTEL REMAINS STRONG AND COLORFUL. INSCRIPTIONS ON THE SLATES READ: Chief Thunder Cloud: "My Dear Merrick, You see we came to-night for you have been so eager & anxious to have our aid and support. God Bless you for your noble work in the cause for the up lifting humanity. Do the best you can for the future of the camp. You will succeed much further. Sanford Lewis Your Chief Grey Eagle: Let the past forgotten.
