Description:
Autograph letter signed by Picton, in ink, 3 pages on 4-page stampless cover addressed on 4th page. 25.5x20 cm (10x8").
Thomas Picton (1758-1815) was a respected general in the British Army in the Napoleonic Wars, feared for his irascible temperament, called by the Duke of Wellington "a rough foul-mouthed devil as ever lived." Knighted in 1813, he died at the Battle of Waterloo five years after the present letter was written. The letter was written shortly after his arrival in Portugal to join Wellington at his headquarters. He comments upon the state of the forces, the reputation of Lisbon (smelly and dangerous for pedestrians), the difficulty in obtaining reliable servants, and the activities of the French in Spain.
