Rare 9th C. Medieval European Leaded-Brass Pyxis

Item Details

Description

Western Europe, Medieval Period, ca. 9th to 14th century CE. A rare leaded-brass vessel known as a pyxis with a squat carinated body and a rectangular neck. Linear and geometric motifs are incised around three quarters of the neck, shoulders, and below the carinated area. A small lid is attached over the mouth with a hinge and a latch to secure it. The lid still articulates to reveal the interior cavity of the vessel! Below the hinge on the neck exterior is a small loop for suspension. A pyxis is a small box, and in ancient times they were used for storing cherished items or cosmetics, the style of vessel was later used in medieval times to hold consecrated hosts. Size: 1.5" W x 1.75" H (3.8 cm x 4.4 cm)
