Lovely painting of a young girl in a hand-painted frame. “The Empty Basket” title painted on rear of canvas and signed “Vinciata.” Vinciata (Joseph Wallace King) was a famous painter who painted presidents and queens, and once captured national attention for buying the world’s largest painting on canvas, a famous 1883 cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg. The 410-foot, 360-degree panoramic painting put King in the Guinness Book of World Records and on the TV game show “I’ve Got a Secret.” His favorite subjects were young girls and very young women painted on a background reminiscent to that of the famous “Mona Lisa.” The painting in this lot has a background very typical of his style, picturing a lovely young girl with a full head of hair. Also typical of Vinciata is the bright skyline on the horizon moving up the canvas to a dark, cloudy sky. He often painted his frames in a certain decorative style, as can be seen in one of the accompanying photos. His frames were often a hallmark of his original paintings; the decoration on the frame of “The Empty Basket” is nearly exactly the same as the example in one of the accompanying photos. Although prints of Vinciata’s works are generally priced at a few hundred dollars, his original paintings usually have a price tag of a few thousand all the way up to fifty thousand dollars.
