Storming Fort Wagner: Charge of the 54th Mass. (Cold.) Rgt. July 18, 1863..., printed 1890 by Kurz and Allison, Chicago, chromolithograph on paper, image 17.5 x 25 inches, full sheet 22 x 28 inches, in a wood frame 23 x 29 inches. One of the most iconic renderings of a Civil War Battle, this shows a regiment of Black soldiers storming the walls of Fort Wagner on Morris Island, South Carolina, with the dramatic death of Col. Robert Gould Shaw at center. Full caption lower left reads: Charge of the 54' Mass (Col'd) Rgt. July 18' 1863. Union (Gen. Gillmore, Com.) Loss: Gen. Strong, Cols. Shaw, Chatfield, Putnam Kd, Gen. Seymore wd, 1200 sol. kd & wd. Conf. (Gen. Beauregard, Com.) Loss: 16 Off. & 300 Sol.
Condition
Dampstain to upper half of the left margin that just encroaches on to small areas of the image causing waving; short closed tear to that margin as well; another one to center of upper margin; otherwise at least good condition, with bold colors.
