Item Details
Description
Vintage 14kt Spinel Sapphire Engagement Ring. Old Mine Cut., 2.5ctw, size 7.25, 2.90 grams. Six large prongs snugly hold the stone. Age appears to be mid to late 1800's. At the latest it would be very early 1900's. The stone is a bit of a mystery - it seems to be a mix of spinel and colorless sapphire. It does have two little blemishes on a facet on top of the ring and one on the girdle but that is it. It's an old ring and having some wear would be expected - otherwise i is pretty clean. It has the short raised table - the stone is not really round but more like a elongated round or a slight oval. It measures in a range of 7.5mm, 7.8m and 7.9mm around the ring giving it a slightly off round look but not quite oval. The stone reflects or absorbs blue and then reflects blues easily giving it a very pale blue color in some lights and in some surroundings. I believe it is old mine cut versus old European for a few reasons, one of them being that it doesn't have a frosted girdle which is more typical of old European. It is a very tall stone too at appx. 5.5mm. The other odd thing about this stone is that when tested first on a diamond tester it will test as diamond on the first try but not after that. I know moissanite will do that some times but the refractive index was in line with sapphire. So, it's a mystery a bit on the stone. Despite being a trained gemologist, this ring is a bit of a stumper. It is a large stone that sits high on the finger sitting appx. 8.8mm above the lowest part of the band. The band is 2.2mm at the top of the ring next to the setting and tapers down to .8mm at the back of the finger - the depth or thickness of the band is 1.4mm at top to 1.1mm at the back of the finger. This ring was worn a lot but is still in good condition and could even be considered very good given its age. I purchased fairly large collection of rings at a recent sale and am pricing this lower than usual to move it along. I've seen similar ones to this with similar questions priced over $1,000. The gold is solid and real gold not layered, plated, or gold filled. This came from PA. estate sale. Very good condition. See photos. Lot. Loc. W.1.119.22X2,NO.58 - LD 1/8/19.
