Notes & Literature Horace Gordon Hutchinson (1859-1932) was reared near Westward Ho! where his father was a founding member at the Royal North Devon Golf Club. Curiously enough, a young J. H. Taylor was bookblack to the Hutchuinson family while there. A fine and prolific writer on the game, Hutchinson could play with equal aplomb, winning the British Amateur Championship in 1886 and 1887. The Book of Golf and Golfers is a compendium containing history on the ancient game, instruction by various hands, a complete chapter on clubs and balls, another chapter on making the wooden-shafted club by five-time Open Champion J. H. Taylor, a chapter on Ladies Golf, one on Methods of Play by Hutchinson and perhaps most importantly, a chapter by Sutton on the Laying out and up keeping of the greens. Pre-1900 knowledge on greenkeeping was scarce and difficult to obtain, while information on golf course architecture was almost non-existent.
Condition Report Very Good Plus. It is very unusual to find a copy of this title as good as this.
