Sam Thal was an American artist, born in New York City in 1903. He spent much of his childhood in Connecticut, where his family owned a farm, moving back to NYC when he was thirteen. He began his formal studies in art around that time, attending evening classes at the National Academy of Design and later the Art Students' League and Beaux Arts Academy. At the age of twenty, Thal moved to Boston, when he would remain for the rest of his life.
In 1938 and 1939 Thal helped establish the educational programs used by the Federal Art Project, while also producing artwork for the program. His work was regularly exhibited at the Doll & Richards Gallery in Boston and he received awards for his etchings from the Library of Congress and the Society of American Etchers.
