Artist: Alice Harold Murphy (1896-1966)
Etching and drypoint, undated, 1945.
Signed in pencil. Inscribed "PW ASL" and "SAE". PW ASL stands for printed at the Art Students League and SAE stands for the Society of American Etchers. Will Barnett said that he was the master printer at the league, that was part of his salary, and he would fail any student who asked him to print more than 5 of any image.

Alice Harold Murphy (1896-1966) Printmaker and painter, was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on September 26, 1896. She studied at Parsons School of Design, The Art Students League, and the school of the National Academy of Design. She was a member of the Society of American Etchers (today known as SAGA), Boston Printmakers, Audubon Artists, Knickerbocker Artists and was an associate at the National Academy of Design. She received numerous awards during her long career and her work is in many institutional collections including the New York Public Library, the Metropolitan Musuem of Art, and the Library of Congress.
