Title: Priscilla. [Priscilla Alden]
Artist: Elizabeth Gardner (1837-1922).
Photogravure, undated c. 1895.
Published by D. Appleton & Co. New York.
Image size 11 5/8 x 9" (29.7 x 22.9 cm).
Priscilla Mullins was a memorable figure in early colonial America. She crossed the Atlantic on the Mayflower and lost her parents and brother during their first winter in Plymouth, MA. She took to spinning and teaching children for the Colony, later marrying John Alden, a fellow traveler on the Mayflower and friend to Miles Standish. H. W. Longfellow's poem "The Courtship of Miles Standish" touches upon this classic love story between these friends. Painter Elizabeth Gardner has successfully grasped Priscilla's humility and industry in this handsome print.
Elizabeth Jane Gardner was an American painter, born in Exeter, New Hampshire. She traveled to Paris in 1864, where she took up private art lessons and became one of the first American women to exhibit at the Paris Salon in 1868.
