Southwestern USA, Colorado, Anasazi / Ancestral Puebloans, ca. 1200 to 1300 CE. A beautiful and very large black-on-white pottery bowl with geometric motifs on the interior of the basin. The bowl rests on a rounded base with tall walls that flare steeply upward. The interior has a fantastic decorative program of triangular patterns, stepped shapes, and linear motifs, which together create bands that meet at the center at right angles. Vessels in this tradition were coated with a pearly gray-white slip that was then overpainted with a black pigment made from carbon. The artisan who made this bowl probably lived in a cliff dwelling like those seen at Mesa Verde National Park, where houses were reached by ladders. You can see that the pattern painted in this bowl's interior resembles ladders leaning against one another. A beautiful example! Size: 12.25" Diameter x 6.5" H (31.1 cm x 16.5 cm)

Repaired from many pieces with restoration and overpainting. Break lines are visible with infill along fissures. Fading and chipping of paint, but nice preservation of motifs. Old inventory label painted on base.
