Texas landscape watercolorist Hattie Virginia Palmer was born on May 29, 1866, in Ripley, Ohio, where she grew up. She would later travel around Texas, her adopted state, painting the bluebonnet flower fields in bloom around San Antonio, La Grange, and Austin. Some of her pictures include "A Foggy Morning in Houston;" "Texas Bluebonnets;" "Misty Morning of Spring;" and "The Golden Gleam of Autumn." She was termed "South Texas' ranking painter of bluebonnets" in 1924. During a trip in 1926, she also painted in Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Though Hattie Palmer did study privately, her more formal education took place in 1894-1897 at the Cincinnati Academy of Art, in Ohio, where she studied drawing and china painting. She lived in Indianapolis, Indiana, and briefly in New Orleans, Louisiana, before settling in 1907 in Houston, Texas with her husband, Charles F. Palmer, whom she had married five years earlier. She was a member of the Texas Fine Arts Association and the Southern States Art League, as well as a founding member of the Houston Art League, which later became the Museum of Fine Arts. The artist died in Houston on October 11, 1933. In 1924, Hattie Palmer had a one-person exhibition in Houston at the Museum of Fine Arts. Other shows include the Oklahoma-Texas Exhibition, Wichita Falls, Texas; Fort Worth Museum of Art; and Texas Fine Arts Association, Austin, as well as exhibitions in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Nashville, Tennessee.
