After a successful career as an illustrator, Warhol gained international fame through his innovative work in painting, avant-garde film and literature. Considered at the time a guru of modernity, Warhol was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His fame as an illustrator was, at first, an obstacle to his consideration as an artist. From this fact stems his questioning of the status of art and its relationship with the market, a cornerstone of his artistic thought. He strongly criticized the separation between art and the general public, and therefore between art and the market, and tried to interpret commercial and popular culture as an artistic subject. Today, Warhol is represented in the world's most important contemporary art museums, such as the MoMA, the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim in New York, the Fukoka Museum in Japan, the Kunstmuseum in Basel, the National Art Museum of the 21st Century in Rome, the MUMOK in Vienna, the SMAK in Ghent and the Tate Gallery in London, as well as in the museums that bear his name in Pittsburgh and Medzilaborce (Slovakia).
