He made his solo debut in 1963, and only seven years later, in 1970, the Whitechapel Gallery in London dedicated his first major retrospective exhibition to him. More recently, important exhibitions have been dedicated to him, such as the portrait exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2006. His work has been shown all over the world, and he is currently represented in the Royal Collection, the Royal Academy, the Victoria & Albert and the British Museum in London, the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, the SMAK in Ghent, the J. Paul Getty in Los Angeles and the Art Institute of Chicago, among other collections.
