ANTIQUE JAMES LAWRENCE "THE CHESAPEAKE" SCRIMSHAW TOOTH DESK ORNAMENT. depicting Captain James Lawrence of the US frigate Chesapeake. During the War of 1812 the Chesapeake sailed out of Boston to do battle with the British frigate Shannon. Although defeated in close combat, Lawrence gave the order that became a motto of the US Navy. "Don't give up the ship, fight 'er till she sinks." A great find and an exellent addition to your collection
