Item Details
Description
Spanish school of the mid-16th century."Sepulcher of San Félix Valesio".Oil on panel.Measurements: 37.5 x 27.5 cm; 51.5 x 42 cm (frame). We are faced with a typically Renaissance composition, featuring a multitude of characters arranged around the tomb of Saint Felix Valesius, which includes the inscription "The tomb of Saint Felix will work miracles". It is a panel of great compositional clarity, determined by the monumental architecture in which the scene is developed, flooded by a contained and solemn religious feeling. The chromatism is also typical of the 16th century, with wide patches of perfectly studied and toned color, which acquires relief thanks to a careful work of light.Little is known with certainty about the life of Félix de Valois, since in Trinitarian chronicles there are hardly any references to him, and they are always surrounded by a certain mystery. Even his existence has been doubted. However, the pontifical documents addressed to Brother Felix, Minister, are sufficiently clarifying to assure his existence. When John of Mata celebrated his First Mass on January 28, 1193 in the Cathedral of Paris, he received a divine vision that inspired him to begin a new religious Order in the Church. That vision was later reflected in the Mosaic of the Trinitarian Order, called Signum Ordinis Sanctae Trinitatis, which is still preserved on the façade of St. Thomas in Formis in Rome. John of Mata withdraws to a desert of prayer near Paris, near Meaux, a place called Cerfroid, where he meets a group of hermits, led by Felix. In the tradition of the Order, Felix has always been considered as the first companion of John of Mata for the foundation of the Order.
