Description
Spanish School of the 16th century.
"Saint Michael, Saint Sebastian, Saint Paul and Saint Peter".
Four oil paintings on wood panels.
Restorations, lost, xylophages.
Measurements: 78,5 x 37,5 cm (large: ); 48 x 37 (small), 148 x 94 cm (frame).
We can relate this work to the Spanish Renaissance painter Hernando de Esturmio, of Flemish origin, who died in Seville in 1556. There are numerous conjectures about the figure of this Flemish painter, one of the most outstanding representatives of the Renaissance in the city of Seville, along with Pedro de Campaña. Although he was not as good as Pedro de Campaña, Esturmio's work was in great demand in Seville, where he was the last of the great foreign painters of the Renaissance. His Sevillian period, about which most information is available, reveals the essential characteristics of his painting. It combines the tradition of Flemish painting, the experience of his trip to Spain with a possible stay in Italy and, finally, the artistic influences of the Seville of the time. As in the other arts, the first manifestations of Renaissance painting in Spain were linked to the work of foreign artists. Motivated and attracted by the economic boom in the Andalusian capital at the beginning of the 16th century, many artists such as Esturmio arrived there.
