Description
Attributed to George Bauer Dunbar, it does not have a COA. Medium: oil and collage on board, 21 x 18 inches. Provenance: private owner.
Biography: George Dunbar was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1927. However, as an infant, his family moved to Bozeman, Montana when his father began teaching at Montana State College.Early in his life, Dunbar thought of following in his father's footsteps with a career in law; however, he made the, as he called it, "wise" decision not to become a lawyer. Every year, Dunbar's mother would take him to New York to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He claims that these experiences forced him to look at things. Straight out of high school, Dunbar enlisted in the Navy working as a salvage diver for two years during WWII. After his service, he was able to use his GI Bill to pursue art instead of following his parents' wish for his academia. In 1951, Dunbar graduated from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. He received a B.F.A in Painting. Then in 1953, he attended Academie Grande Chaumiere in Paris, France.Dunbar's contemporary style was shaped by his early childhood visits to the Met, his experiences salvage diving, his formal training, as well as his coming of age during the 1940's and 1950's when Abstract Expressionism was the dominant style.Dunbar had many teaching positions in New Orleans, LA including: Isidore Newman School, Donna Perret Rosen Artist-in-Residence, Tulane University, School of Architecture and 331 Art School.
