Item Details
Description
Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early 20th century CE. Made from light wood, this is a kundu, the Papuan name for a drum. The drum has an hourglass shape and two openwork handles projecting from one side. At one time, this item would have had a lizard skin stretched across its ends. Drums like this one are made throughout Papua New Guinea, from a variety of local woods, and come in many forms - some dramatically carved, others painted bright colors, and they are made through a complex process of hand-carving and burning that has been repeated for centuries. When in use, wax, honey, or coal tar is sometimes put onto the skin to alter the drum's sound. Size: 8.7" W x 28" H (22.1 cm x 71.1 cm); 32.3" H (82 cm) on included custom stand.
