Description
West Africa, Ivory Coast, between southeast Mali and southern Burkino Faso, Senufo, ca. early 20th century CE. A sizeable Senufo Firestarter masquerade drum comprised of wood and covered with animal hide, with areas on the side walls still presenting amber hued hair. A drum like this is traditionally played by the lead performer and makes a sonorous, deep sound. Drums are among the most significant forms of material culture in Africa, serving as both musical instruments as well as works of sculptural art created for ceremonial purposes including story-telling, dances, rituals, and communication of messages. The playing of percussive instruments transferred over the Atlantic to the Americas where African slaves continued to use drums for such purposes. As time went on, the rhythmic techniques involved also influenced Afro-Cuban as well as African-American musical genres. Size: 15" in diameter at widest point x 17.5" H (38.1 cm x 44.4 cm)
