This lot consists of a watercolor illustration on paper, rendered in the modern style of Fauvist painter Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954). Image depicts a circle of blue figures, striking elegant shapes as they appear to dance, hand-in-hand. This stunning piece is a perfect example of the understated style for which Matisse was so well known. Handwritten graphite inscription at bottom right reads, "H. Matisse". Unframed dimensions approximately 8.25" x 11.75".
Henri Matisse (French, 1869 - 1954) was an artist known for both his fluid use of colour and his original draughtsmanship. He was an illustrator, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century.
