This lot consists of a watercolor illustration on paper, rendered in the modern style of Fauvist painter Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954). Image depicts five female figures in brilliant blue pigment. This stunningly elegant piece is a perfect example of the understated style for which Matisse was so well known. Handwritten inscription at bottom reads, "H. Matisse". Unframed dimensions approximately 8.25" x 11.5".

Henri Matisse (French, 1869 - 1954) was an artist known for both his fluid use of colour and his original draughtsmanship. He was an illustrator, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century.
