Description
This lot consists of an ink and watercolor illustration on paper, done in the Pop Art style of Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987). "Andy Warhol" is inscribed in ink at bottom right. This modern art image depicts a fanciful red ladies shoes with high heels and an accompanying inscription: "Uncle Sam wants shoe!" A charming, modern addition to any collector's gallery. The log of the famed New York nightclub, Studio 54, can also be seen at top right. Studio 54 was a frequent haunt of Warhol's, as well as the glitterati of the 1970s and '80s. This unframed piece measures approximately 8.25" x 11.5".
Reverse side features three stamps. One, at top left corner, reads "Art Gallery New York". Another, at bottom, reads "AW" and is overlapped by a stamp which reads, "Certificate of Authenticity. The Undersigned Hereby Certify This to Be An Original Andy Warhol [...] Frederick Hughes, Executor, Estate of Andy Warhol".
Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) was a leader of contemporary art, which solidified the way that we now visualize the mid-century American era, its faces, and its mass culture. Warhol was a producer, director, printmaker, and illustrator who hailed from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From his beginnings in the commercial art world, Warhol held a firm grasp of popular image and advertising power. By the time of his death in 1987, Warhol's name would become synonymous with the Banana Factory, Studio 54, Campbell's Tomato Soup, and, most succinctly, Pop Art.
