This lot consists of an unframed acrylic painting on unstretched canvas, done in the abstract Expressionist style of Frantisek Kupka (Czech, 1871-1957). A hand-painted inscription at lower right corner. Image depicts several human figures in a wash of red. The character in the forefront peers backward over his shoulder, a glint of metallic gold separating the other figures from a field of white. This unframed piece measures approximately 19.5" x 22.75".

Frantisek Kupka (Czech, 1871-1957) was a painter and graphic artist who was born in Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic). A pioneer of abstract art and Orphism (also known as Orphic Cubism). Kupka served as a volunteer in the first World War, ultimately leaving because of a case of frostbite in the foot. After the war, in the early 1930s, Kupka devoted his energy to the foundation of Abstraction-Creation -- a loose association of Parisian artists whose work was designed to counteract the influence of Andre Breton and his Surrealist cohorts. This group included Georges Vantongerloo, Auguste Herbin, Jean Helion, and Theo van Doesburg.
