Description
A very fine old carved wooden sculpture of Akua'Ba,( Child of Akua) a wooden idol consecrated by priests and carried by women who hope to conceive a child. The flat, disc like head is an exaggerated convention of the Akan ideal of beauty, the flattened shape of the sculpture also serves a practical purpose, since women carry the figures against their backs wrapped in their skirts. This figure has a layered kaolin clay pigment surface and adorned with a blue bead necklace. The sculpture measures 8.25 inches tall ( 8.75 inches tall on custom display stand) Provenance: Galerie Robert Duperrier, Paris
