Description
This is an uncommon, handsome double-hemisphere world map showing the ancient world, with classical place names in the eastern hemisphere, and just a few mythical place names in the western hemisphere such as Atlantis Insula Platoni for the Americas. California is shown as an Island. The Great Lakes are open-ended in the west, the northwest coast of North America remains blank and there are spurious mountains and rivers throughout the western hemisphere. The coast lines of Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, Antarctica and Novaya Zemlya are only partially defined. Korea is an island and the Caspian sea is miss-shaped. This map was originally published by Sanson in 1657. There is a quote from Marcus Manilius' Astronomica, the earliest known treatise on astrology. Later versions of this map show California as part of the continent.
