In August of that year, along the Minnesota River in the southwestern part of the state, the Dakota tribe began attacking settlers due to the harsh conditions and hunger they had been suffering for several years. In the upper northwest corner of Redwood County, the Sioux Agency and Indian Village are noted, which indicates the general area these events occurred. When the uprising had ben quelled, 303 Dakota tribesmen were sentenced to death. Abraham Lincoln eventually commuted most of those sentences, but not before 38 men were hanged down the river at Mankato in Blue Earth County. It is to this day the largest mass execution held in the United States. This historic 1862 map is the first time Mitchell featured a separate state map of Minnesota; it had been grouped with other states and territories before this edition.
