Throughout the first half of the 1850s, Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. produced wonderful, highly detailed maps of the United States, including individual states. The maps were essentially the same engraving done by S. Augustus Mitchell, updated to reflect the rapidly growing changes in the burgeoning nation. The 1850 map of South Carolina is basically unchanged through the first six editions in the 1850s, but the change from the 1849 Mitchell map is quite significant. In the southern part of the state, fourteen early counties have been carved out of three larger counties (Beaufort, Colleton and Charleston). St. Mathew County now takes up what had been the northeast portion of Orangeburg County. The lower half of Sumter County has now become Clarendon County. None of the early Mitchell maps show these important changes. Also shown is an inset of Charleston, with its five boroughs clearly delineated. Names of Charleston’s docks prior to the Civil War are listed. Tables of Steam Boat routes and References to Charleston are shown, as well as an Explanation of map legends. All this in addition to cities, topographical data, ferries, railroads and other information. A fantastic map. This example is well centered and features full, original hand coloring by counties. Some mild and light staining at lower margin edge and left corner margin area, none of which will show when matted. 11.5 x 14.125.
