Item Details
Description
Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Curtiss O-1E Falcon" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board.

Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.

This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative cover with a US 29c Flag stamp postmarked January 1, 1994.

By 1923, the U.S. Air Corps needed a new observation-type aircraft and thus was born the 0-1 Falcon. The sleek biplane was unique, for its fuselage was made of aluminum tubing, riveted and bolted together with steel braces and covered with fabric. Although the Curtiss design took second place to the Douglas XO-2 in the 1924 observation design competition, it soon occupied first place in the public's imagination due to its sharp-looking engine cowl and sweptback upper wing. The Falcon was destined to become one of history's forgotten airplanes, however, since it was not a glamorous fighter but a workhorse two-seater that never saw combat with the U.S. Armed Forces. A total of 279 Falcons were produced, but by the mid-1930s the plane was obsolete. Depicted here is an 01-E Falcon assigned to the U.S. Air Corps Detachment at Bolling Field, Washington, D.C., about 1927.
