This painting was originally purchased for the Fleetwood First Day Cover for a Canada Fort Battleford stamp.

Fort battleford was founded in 1876 in the heart of Creecountry for the use of the North West Mounted Police. It was in use until 1924. First came word that nine volunteers and three North West Mounted Police were killed March 26 by Metis and Indian insurgents at Duck Lake. Then came word that angry Indians from the Poundmaker reserve were coming to attack Battleford. The spring of 1885 was a terrifying time for the settlers in the Town of Battleford. The 500 men, women and children abandoned their homes and belongings to take refuge in the fort, a NWMP depot whose minimal defences reflected the Mounties' policy of persuasion rather than force in dealing with indiginous peoples. Help finally arrived April 24 with the arrival of militiamen under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel William Otter.
